Apple upgrading the Mini with Yonah processors makes the most sense. The Mini is all about being affordable; I hate it when people use the word cheap, cheap is the crap you buy at Wal-Mart the mini is not cheap. We probably won't see a Core 2 Mini until but that just fine for me because that's when the Intel GMA X3000 will be ready. Coupling a Core 2 Duo processor with a GMA X3000 will give the Mini a lot of punch.
This is how I predict the product lines will look by the end of the year:
Yonah --> Mac Mini & MacBook
Merom --> MacBook Pro
Conroe --> iMac
Xeon --> Mac Pro & Xserve

The 6950m and 6970m are also available in 2gb models. That would help with the larger resolution of the 27" display. Let's hope for that as well!

It's not about being groundbreaking perse. It's about making the look & feel of the UI similar to iOS devices so that those who use are using iOS devices but switching to the Mac don't have a steep learning curve.

I think it's way to early to make any judgments regarding Zune sales. Let's see what the numbers look like after Christmas.
5 years ago, Zune, in it's current form, might have been a hit.. but not in todays market. Especially considering folks who have lots of money tied up in MP3's aren't going to be real interested in throwing them away, and starting all over again.. or spend countless hours converting thousands of files.
I don't find it ugly, but I sure don't care for the brown color. What I noticed most about the Zune is that it feels and looks cheap in person. Like what i'd expect a mockup or prototype unit to look and feel like. From a distance, it looks fine.. you get close up, and.. well.. not so nice.
Almost like they rushed it to market in time for the '06 Holiday buying season.

Comparisons of the Zune to the Xbox are not really fair.. they are two entirely different products.
Microsoft (as well as Sony and Nintendo) can sell the unit itself for at or below their actual cost, because where they make the real money isn't in selling the game console, but in selling the games and accessories.
With MP3 players, you have to make money on the product sale, because there is no guarantee the end user will buy all their music from your 'store'.
Zune specs are subject to change.. as are most retail products. Don't forget that when the iPod was first introduced, it only worked with Macs.. then they made a Windows version.. then finally they made an iPod that worked with either computer.
I expect a new version of the Zune by spring.. with new features, and less restriction.

It seems that if this rumor is correct, then why now? Why not 2 months ago? Have mini sales been all that great to warrant holding off on a simple update? Or could they possibly have been waiting for other products to move to merom so the mini doesn't infringe? I just don't understand why this has taken so long.I would assume they're going to update everything at once to make a grander impression with all of the new upgrades. Sure, they could probably easily update the mini now and make it available for purchase, but why not wait until the C2D hits the other machines at the same time? That way Apple can say their entire computer product line has been updated. By first doing the speed bumps to the Merom speeds with Yonah, they can deliver an immediate benefit to their mini customers without spreading the limited supply of Meroms all over the lines yet.
So after they have enough Meroms for MBP they can switch the MB to Meroms at the same speeds as now, then switch the mini ALMOST silently once that line is satisfied fully. iMac is a big unknown due to Conroe possability.
More I think about it, that is probably what's happening. I just bought a mazda 3 to on Monday, I love it, its fun to drive to.
I too have a Mazda 3 (2010), it is a lot of fun to drive, except the pickup can be weird some times. I drove it down to Pittsburgh once and it was a lot of fun on the thruway.

I don't know how credible this particular Digitimes story is, but I can't imagine that Apple isn't working on wireless iPod capability. It won't be all things to all people, but it's probably necessary because it'll open the door to more features, because more and more consumers expect gadgets to have wireless capabilities, and because Apple wants to stay well ahead of all competition.

not that this is anything new. but ethically, if a company insists that you are buying your little piece of a movie(or music or art) instead of buying a physical copy, then you should be able to procure as many copys as you want from where ever you can for the cost of production materials.

Planet Germany ;) The not so expensive part of it though (other Germans are quite surprised too). Macs are pretty expensive here though, IMHO. And there isn't a single store you can get Macs... in a town with 200000 people or so. Oh well...

Mainstream? I doubt any 8+ core users will be mainstream outside of commercial use.
Just like everything, 8 cores will become main stream sooner rather than later. If the PS3 gets popular then 7-core will be very mainstream soon enough.
As programs get more and more multithreaded the speed increases from multiple cores will get bigger and bigger. Even if you think about a browser. The browser can itself have multiple threads, for different tabs, the display area, downloading new pages, downloading in the back ground. Then think about java, flash, pdf's in browser and all this web 2.0 stuff. They can all run in separate threads. I know none of these are particularly processor intensive (yet...) but you can see where there could be a use for multi processor in the future.
In less than ten years i can see us with MMP computers, Massively multi-processor.
